Jamal Badawi is an Egyptian born Muslim Canadian professor in Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is a well-known author, activist, preacher and speaker on Islam and Muslims. He completed his undergraduate studies in Cairo, Egypt and his Masters and Ph. D. Degrees at Indiana University in Bloomington, In.
Dr. Badawi has authored several books and articles on Islam. He also researched, designed and presented a 352-segment television series on Islam, shown in many local TV stations in Canada and the US and in other countries as well. Audio and video copies of this series are widely available throughout the world. Some titles of his published works are: Selected prayers, Gender Equity in Islam, Muhammad in the Bible, Status of Women in Islam, Polygamy in Islamic Law, The Earth and Humanity: An Islamic Perspective, Islam: A Brief Look, Muslim Woman's Dress According to the Qur'an and the Sunnah and Islamic Ethics.
In addition to his participation in lectures, seminars and interfaith dialogues in North America, Dr. Badawi was invited as a guest speaker in various functions throughout the world. He is also active in several Islamic organizations, including the Islamic Society of North America and is the Founder/chairman of the Islamic Information Foundation, a non-profit foundation seeking to promote a better understanding of Islam and the Muslims towards non-Muslims. Zaid Shakir is amongst the most respected and influential Islamic scholars in the West. As an American Muslim who came of age during the civil rights struggles, he has brought both sensitivity about race and poverty issues and scholarly discipline to his faith-based work.
Born in Berkeley, California, he accepted Islam in 1977 while serving in the United States Air Force. He obtained a BA with honors in International Relations at American University in Washington D.C. and later earned his MA in Political Science at Rutgers University. While at Rutgers, he led a successful campaign for disinvestment from South Africa, and co-founded a local Islamic center, Masjid al-Huda.
After a year of studying Arabic in Cairo, Egypt, he settled in New Haven, Connecticut and continued his community activism, co-founding Masjid al-Islam, the Tri-State Muslim Education Initiative, and the Connecticut Muslim Coordinating Committee. As Imam of Masjid al-Islam from 1988 to 1994 he spear-headed a community renewal and grassroots anti-drug effort, and also taught political science and Arabic at Southern Connecticut State University. He then left for Syria to pursue his studies in the traditional Islamic sciences.
For seven years in Syria, and briefly in Morocco, he immersed himself in an intense study of Arabic, Islamic law, Quranic studies, and spirituality with some of the top Muslim scholars of our age. In 2001, he graduated from Syria's prestigious Abu Noor University and returned to Connecticut, serving again as the Imam of Masjid al-Islam, and writing and speaking frequently on a host of issues. That same year, his translation from Arabic into English of The Heirs of the Prophets was published by Starlatch Press.
In 2003, he moved to Hayward, California to serve as a scholar-in-residence and lecturer at Zaytuna Institute, where he now teaches courses on Arabic, Islamic law, history, and Islamic spirituality. In 2005, Zaytuna Institute published Scattered Pictures, an anthology of diverse essays penned by Zaid Shakir.
He is a frequent speaker at local and national Muslim events and has emerged as one of the nation’s top Islamic scholars and a voice of conscience for American Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Dr. Hatem Bazian, received his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Islamic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Currently, Bazian is a senior lecturer in the Departments of Near Eastern and Ethnic Studies. Dr. Bazian between 2002-2007, also served as an adjunct professor of law at Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. He teaches courses on Islamic Law and Society, Islam in America: Communities and Institutions, De-Constructing Islamophobia and Othering of Islam, Religious Studies, and Middle Eastern Studies. In addition to Berkeley, Dr. Bazian is a visiting Professor in Religious Studies at Saint Mary's College of California and adviser to the Religion, Politics and Globalization Center at UC Berkeley as well as Academic Affairs Chair at Zaytuna College of California. In Spring 2009, Dr. Bazian founded at Berkeley the Center for the Study and Documentation of Islam phobia, a research unit dedicated to the systematic study of Othering Islam and Muslims.
Bazian is known for being an organic intellectual, a term used for academics directly connecting their research to the people; rather than looking down from the ivory tower. Dr. Bazian's published book, Jerusalem in Islamic Consciousness, is a reflection of his desire to contribute to a better understanding of Muslim attachment and informed political attitudes toward the Sacred City and Palestine in general. Currently, Dr. Bazian is working on two books, Silicon Rush: Documenting Muslim Communities in the the Silicon Valley; and Virtual Internment: Muslims and the War on Terrorism. Bazian most recent publication is a chapter contribution in French on Islam phobia and an entry to Oxford's Human Rights Encyclopedia covering the HR under the Palestinian Authority.

Tariq H. Cheema is the founder of the World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists, an organization dedicated to bringing together donors for the exchange of ideas and proven practices, and to institute an environment of enduring engagement. Dr. Cheema received his MD from University of Istanbul in 1992 and did an advanced study in Philanthropy at Loyola University Chicago. Mr. Awad is the Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Washington DC-based grassroots membership organization which seeks to empower the North American Muslim community through political and social activism.
Mr. Awad helped found CAIR in June 1994, which has grown rapidly in the United States and Canada. CAIR's experts are frequently interviewed on national and international media such as CNN, BBC World Service, the New York Times and Washington Post while its trademark Action Alerts go nationwide by fax and worldwide on the Internet.
In 1997 Mr. Awad joined the Civil Rights Advisory Panel to the White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security.
Mr. Awad conducts media seminars across the country to train Muslim communities in communication techniques. CAIR's publications on the status of Muslim civil rights in the United States have been featured on several talk shows and distributed to every member of Congress.
He helped CAIR carry out successful campaigns against major corporations, including Nike, and Simon and Schuster, resulting in the recall of products offensive to Muslims.
On civil rights he has been very active in helping Muslims claim their rights in the workplace, in well-known companies such as JC Penney, McDonald's, Sears, Office Depot, and many others. CAIR has also distributed an "Employer's Guide" and an "Educator's Guide to Islamic Religious Practices," which are designed to prevent acts of discrimination, and more such guides are forthcoming.

Hossam AlJabri is the Executive Director of the Muslim American Society. He is a Board of Trustee member of the Interreligious Center on Public Life (ICPL). He is an advisory board member in Harvard University Islam in the West Project, Boston Muslims Survey. He holds an Engineering degree, and an MBA from Suffolk University, and a Certificate in Nonprofit Strategic Management from Harvard University. He studied Islamic studies with traditional scholars, as well as in the Islamic American University, the American Open University, and Boston University.

Osama Abu-Irshaid is completing his Ph.D. at Loughborough University, U.K., and is the founder and editor in chief of Al-Meezan newspaper, published in Arabic in the United States. He is a regular commentator on Palestinian and Middle Eastern affairs as well as on the American domestic and foreign policy on various Arabic satellite T.V. channels such as Aljazeera, Syrian T.V., Al-Alam, Abu-Dhabi, Alhiwar T.V, and Iran T. V. Also, he lecturers on Middle Eastern and American Politics. He authored or coauthored several books in Arabic and he published dozens of studies and articles mostly in Arabic and some in English. He is the coauthor of the study: Hamas: Ideological Rigidity and Political Flexibility. A study published in English (June, 2009) by The United States Institute of Peace (USIP). Osama Abu-Irshaid is known activist in our community.

Imam Ahmed Elkhaldy was born in Kuwait in 1974 and moved with his family to Egypt in 1984, completing his high school education at the Alazhar Academy in Cairo in 1992. In 1995 he received his diploma in Islamic Studies from Alazhar University, and in 1996 completed his education at the Alazhar University College of Dentistry. Elkhaldy then moved to Orlando, Florida where in 1999 he completed two years of study in Computer Science at Valencia Community College. In addition, he was a student at the Islamic American University in Michigan. Elkhaldy has lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa since 2000, where he is happily married to wife Mona and is raising two sons and a step-son.
Imam Elkhaldy is President of the Muslim American Society (Iowa Chapter), as well as he is the National Director of the Service Corps (MSC), MAS Service Corps is the newly established charity and volunteer division of the Muslim American Society. Prior to that Imam Ahmed served as the National Director of the Inter Religious Center of the Muslim American Society. He also served six years as Imam of the Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids and four years as Associate Imam of the Islamic Society of Central Florida. He has been a member of the Inter-Religious Council of Linn County’s Board of Directors since 2000, and has served as Vice- President since 2004. He is a co-founder and member of the Executive Committee of the Children of Abraham in Cedar Rapids, formed in 2005. In 2006 Elkhaldy joined the Board of Directors of Barnabas Uplift, an outreach program to assist the working poor in the community. In addition, he is a member of the Nation outreach department of the Muslim American Society.
Elkhaldy has done extensive work in public education and outreach programs, leading seminars and workshops locally and nationally for churches and retreat centers, including Catholic, Methodist, Lutheran and Presbyterian; public and private middle and high schools; colleges, including Kirkwood Community College, Coe College, and Mt. Mercy College, all in Cedar Rapids, and Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, the University of Iowa in Iowa City, and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls; law enforcement groups, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals; U.S. Army and U.S. Marines personnel; educators’ groups; Rotary and Optimist clubs; the International Visitors Leadership program at the University of Iowa; and presentations and workshops on interfaith and diversity within the working and school environment. In addition, Elkhaldy teaches Arabic and Islamic Studies for continuing education programs at Kirkwood Community College, and is a speaker and moderator for many local and national conferences. He has been a guest on TV and radio talk shows, and is a trainer for inter-faith work.
Elkhaldy has a second-degree black belt in Judo, and practices Hapkido, Arnis and Kumdo. He is a licensed Judo instructor with the United States Martial Arts Association and enjoys leading youth activities and programs.

Edmund Arroyo is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed School Social Worker. He is a graduate of University of Illinois at Chicago Jane Adams School of Social Work and Knox College in Galesburg, IL. He is the founder of The Heartspeak Institute, where the goal is to provide counseling and education to individuals, couples, and families in an environment that respects their individual and cultural dynamics. With experience in hospital, public schools, and a child welfare agency, Edmund has worked with clients on many types of individual, family, and societal issues. Amal Ali completed her graduate studies at the University of Chicago on the acculturative coping strategies employed by Muslim American youth as they attempt to reconcile conceptual differences in their hyphenated identity. A long-time youth activist herself, she served as Head Counselor at the Muslim Youth Center in Bridgeview for four years and organized youth programs for Inner-city Muslim Action Network (IMAN). Her experience in youth development ranges from years of MYNA camps, MCC camps, MSA, and more. Amal is currently Director of the Youth Development Department at the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) where she oversees the empowerment and capacity building of Northern Illinois' Islamic schools, youth groups, and MSAs; manages interfaith, service and civic opportunities for Muslim youth; and administers Muslim cultural sensitivity training to Illinois public school faculties.
